This behavior is described in a 1966 article by Lawrence Kilham on Hairy Woodpecker behavior, which appears in the September 1966 issue of the Wilson Bulletin (page 254). Kilham dubs this midwinter courtship behavior as "pantomime of copulation." Let's see what Jerry does with that.
