[va-richmond-general] Re: Grosbeaks, plus

We had 3 Rose-breasted Grosbeaks munching on the blossoms of the basswood tree
in our yard and coming to eat sunflower seeds a couple of days ago, and one of
them was back yeaterday. We have now found a good way to know when they are
about to arrive in force: when the basswood leaves are just emerging from the
tops of the blossoms, which was about April 22-23 this year. Lots of birds seem
to really like those blossoms, including YR Warblers, White-throated Sparrows,
Downy Woodpeckers, cardinals, titmice, chickadees, Swamp Sparrows, and even
migrating warblers now and then.

One Indigo Bunting has arrived at our feeders, our first Great-crested
Flycatcher is singing out front, a Blue-headed Vireo and a White-eyed
Vireo are singing down by the creek and THREE lovely male Rose-breasted
Grosbeaks are chowing down on sunflower seeds. And the Brown Thrasher is
learning to hover and eat peanut butter suet from the log!

We have 4 bluebird babies in one box and 5 bluebird eggs in another. We
removed 2 bumblebees burying in a chickadee nest and hope the chickadees
might return.

Ah, spring.
