THE RACE TO SAVE THE LORD GOD BIRD by Phillip Hoose, $20.00 (grades 5-Adult)
Another fascinating book by Portland's own Phil Hoose. This book chronicles
the history and (likely) extinction of the Ivory Billed Woodpecker. Part
thriller, part history lesson, I couldn't stop reading it and I am neither
birder nor middle-schooler. Phil is such an accomplished storyteller and
writer that he could make the ingredients on a box of Pop-Tarts seem exciting.
Phil's last book, WE WERE THERE, TOO, was a National Book Award Finalist and it
is this bookseller's contention that THE RACE TO SAVE THE LORD GOD BIRD will
merit serious award consideration. This book is full of science, economics,
political and social history. Phil has been on the board of the Nature
Conservancy for the last 25 years and has been a friend, mentor, teacher and
gentle spirit to many people and creatures in Portland.
I'm sure we could convince Phil to sign a copy or two for you; just let us
know. And hopefully Phil won't mind if I point you to some of his other, fine
work. Check out this link: www.americanbirding.org/programs/consbexn5.htm
Imagine a world where people help each other to study the wonders of our world.
Across political, language and cultural barriers, folks at The Birders
Exchange in general, and our Phil Hoose in particular, are changing the world,
one set of paints, one pair of binoculars at a time.
Longfellow Books would like to announce that we are donating 2 bucks to The
Birders Exchange as a gift from the people of Portland, every time we sell a
copy of THE RACE TO SAVE THE LORD GOD BIRD.
