Right now we only have 2-3 regular grackles, but in the spring, fall and winter 
we have a large number, gathering by the house in groups of 30 or more.  They 
are a huge problem for the feeders.  They love suet cakes and can devour a cake 
in a few minutes.  I have found the same thing about their being aware of 
anyone nearby, so they fly off quickly when I walk near a door or window, while 
the song birds stay put.  At times it's been so bad that the song birds have 
even learned to COME in while I'm shooing the grackles AWAY!  They'll get some 
food before the grackles come back.  Hope your flocks aren't headed to our 
house yet!
