[va-richmond-general] Re: Goochland Falcon

I don't think it's the male from downtown. First of all, Michael said it
was an adult falcon. The missing male is a fledgling. Secondly, the
fledgling was fitted with a transmitter. It is either not working or, more
likely, the bird was killed somehow where the transmitter's signal cannot be
picked up by satellite, i.e. under a bridge or some similar structure. It's
a shame, but the fact of the matter is only about 20% of peregrine falcon
chicks make it to adulthood. On a happier note, the female recovered and
was released with transmitter from Shenandoah National Park. The other
male, who does not have a transmitter, is still hanging around downtown. I
just saw him today taking a snooze on the First Union building. His parents
are still attentive as he was perched near one of them yesterday. He will
gradually wander further from the nest until he leaves for good.
