[va-richmond-general] Ginter observation

5 birders attended the Saturday morning trip to Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens.
The highlights were a Brown Thrasher 50 feet behind the visitor center as we
started the walk, the Green Heron at the Irrigation Pond ,the bird then flew to
the western edge of the lake behind the Bloomendal House. The peninsula at the
western edge of the lake revealed a Belted Kingfisher that was later and
briefly joined by another, a female Wood Duck with 4 young ones swam
by,several Killdeer , a Spotted Sandpiper and a long term second sighting of
the Green Heron. A Northern Flicker was observed flying onto the mudflat and
then feeding like a sandpiper does. It got right alongside the Killdeer and
the sandpiper.Anyone else ever seen a Flicker do this.

To top off a great trip, I heard a Plieated Woodpecker calling as I drove past
the new fire station under construction on Lake Side Avenue.

Next months trip will probably have even more shorebirds at it will be during
prime time for shorebird migration.

Sincerely,

Tyler Turpin
