[va-richmond-general] Re: Fw: Message From RAS Website

Pam,

It does look like a Cooper's Hawk. Sharpshin looks very similar except for the
pale nape (back of the head), and this one appears to have that, plus it looks
fairly large, not crow-sized. But I don't agree on the abundance of Cooper's. I
see them fairly frequently. They are not as common as Red-shouldered or
Red-tailed, or even Sharp-shinned, but we get them here in Meadowbrook, and see
them all the time other places. Maybe like most birds their numbers are not
what they once were, but not really scarce either. They are a little harder to
see than some others, maybe that's what is referred to here.

Not sure who I should contact about a bird sighting. I have attached
reduced size pictures of what appears to be Cooperʼs Hawk that is visiting our
backyard daily in search of small prey. What we feel is unusual is that we
live in the Fan District on West Avenue . I understand that the Cooperʼs Hawk
is becoming rare. My wife feeds the birds and squirrels everyday, so the small
prey is abundant. I can send much bigger resolution pictures if you like.
