[va-richmond-general] Fw: Hawk Pictures

This person contacted the RAS website for information regarding a hawk that he
sighted in his neighborhood. Could anyone hazard a guess as to what kind of
hawk this might be? Unfortunately all photos are basically silouhettes. Would
anyone know if he needs to worry about a hawk going after a 10 - 17 lb. dog or
if his presence in the yard at the same time as the dog would be a deterrent?

Hi, Robin:

Here are links to two pictures I took Sunday morning.

http://members.aol.com/jedimoderator/hawk1.jpg This one I zoomed in as best I
could. The bird is at least 30-40 feet up.

http://members.aol.com/jedimoderator/hawk2.jpg This one is cropped from the
first one. Unfortunately I couldn't get very good detail but it does show the
profile of the bird's head.

http://members.aol.com/jedimoderator/hawk3.jpg This is another wider shot.

http://members.aol.com/jedimoderator/hawk4.jpg This is cropped from the third
one and zoomed in, and shows the bird's outline a little better. Unfortunately
in all the pictures the bird seemed to be facing away. That combined with the
cloudy day and the tree limbs obscuring things made getting a really clear shot
difficult.

One concern my wife and I have is that we have small dogs, from 10 to 17 lbs.,
and we've heard the occasional reports of hawks and other birds of prey going
after small pets. Would my presence in the back yard when they're out be
enough of a deterrent to a hawk?

Thanks for getting back to me and thanks for your help.
