[va-richmond-general] Feb. 20, 2005 - George Washington's Birthplace

Five intrepid (if a bit groggy) birders made the trip early this morning
from Richmond to George Washington’s Birthplace National Monument and
environs. The number of wintering waterfowl species was down from
reports earlier in the month, but we were compensated with great looks
due to dead calm conditions. Including species from the Birthplace, a
quick trip over to Colonial Beach, and road birds, forty-six species
were found (complete list below). Highlights were hundreds of Tundra
Swans on Pope’s Creek, great looks at a group of Common Mergansers from
the visitor center deck, plenty of Common Goldeneye, Canvasbacks and
Scaup on the Potomac, and a single Great Black-backed Gull hanging out
with hundreds of Cormorants in Colonial Beach. We were also treated to
the archetypical winter "mixed flock" of Titmice, Chickadees, Downy
Woodpeckers, Red-bellied Woodpeckers, White-breasted Nuthatches, and
Brown Creepers at the picnic area at the birthplace.
