[va-richmond-general] Feathered happenings...

Well, Mama Wren is now sitting actively on two eggs! I climbed up on
Thursday to peek in, thinking she'd be out foraging. But there she was...and
as soon as my big head cleared the bird shelter, she bolted. I looked in
quickly and saw two little speckled eggs. Then I was treated to a loud,
buzzing scolding from a nearby branch for no less than 25 minutes. Talk about
irritated! When she finally swooped back down and landed on the shelter, she
trilled and buzzed for another 5 minutes for good measure, just to reiterate
how annoyed she was with my unannounced visit. Geesh!

I now have two female Ruby-throated Hummies visiting my feeder regularly
(Bob, my bait worked!!). The girls take turns eating and seem to know each
other, as one will sip, then land on a branch. The other will come up, sip,
and then they both fly off close together in the same direction, often. Mother
and offspring, maybe?? Haven't seen any males by the feeder, interesting.
Noticed that the Hummies have been at the feeder today every 10 minutes or so
to sip. Seems like the heat has increased their need to eat and they are
coming many times more often during the day than they normally do...anyone else
noticed this, too?

  Happy Monday.
