[va-richmond-general] Re: FW: [Va-bird] Bald Eagle eating wood

Maybe the eagle was eating a piece of mushroom or other fungus that looked
woody? Lots of critters seem to pick at them or consume them with gusto.

I don't know about the eating part, but I observed a pair of adult Bald
Eagles at Point of Rocks on Saturday, 12/27, expressing interest in a
possible next site, with one carrying around a stick. Maybe it's getting to
be that time of year when wood becomes of interest to Eagles.

We have an adult BALD EAGLE that perches regularly in a dead tree in our
neighbor's yard. The tree has been dead for a couple of years and is
getting pretty rotten.

This morning I observed the eagle apparently feeding on something at the top
of the limb that it was perched on. I figured it was the remnants of a fish
catch. On closer examination however, it broke off and swallowed a fair
sized chunk of rotten wood.
