Hello, I wanted to pass on an opportunity to participate in a unique event at Byrd Park this coming Saturday. If you've ever been there looking for the Great Horned Owl, or other species, now is your chance to enhance the environment, have some fun, and contribute to a worthwhile educational opportunity all at the same time. Pam -----Original Message----- On Saturday, March 25 from 9:30-11:30a.m. , please come help us spruce up areas around Shield's Lake in preparation for the wonderful April 7-8 Rec & Parks Trout Fishing Event. Among other things, this event helps school children learn more about special parts of our environment and ecology. See below for information about this two day special annual event. On March 25, we'll do the following: clean leaves, weeds, and debris from the three stairways leading down to Shield's Lake retrieve border capstones which have fallen into the lake scoop [with a long handled strainer basket] trash from the lake in areas where it collects prune suckers from a grove of crepe myrtles Meet at the Equipment Barn at the west end of the bridge between Shield's and Swan Lakes [near Westover Road] at 9:30a.m., or join us later if you can't come that early. We'll work until 11:30a.m. If you have them, bring work gloves, pruners, a broom, and we can use a few hoes and garden rakes to retrieve capstones. A few lawn rakes could also be useful. If you can join us, please let Prune & Groom Coordinator Amber Foster know at: 353-0348 or amber@xxxxxxx <mailto:amber@xxxxxxx> Let her know if you will need gloves or tools. It would be great to have 10-20 people show up for this start for P & G 2006! See below for info on the actual two day event. Thanks, Rob Welch, President The Friends of William Byrd Park Byrd Park hosts two days of fly fishing Corrected web page address for the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries The Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities has partnered with the Virginia Capital Chapter of Trout Unlimited to bring two days of trout fishing to Byrd Park's Shields Lake, Saturday, April 8, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Shields Lake. According to Andrew Stiles of Trout Unlimited, no one should go home empty-handed because the lake will be stocked. The event will also include instructions in fly fishing and fly tying. Guidebooks on trout fishing will be available for free. Children 15 and younger do not need a fishing license to participate, but a license and a trout fishing permit is required for 16 and older. Both can be purchased online from the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries at http://www.dgif.virginia.gov or by calling 1-800-986-2628. Participants who want to fish should also bring their own rod and reel, although equipment will be available for the fly fishing lessons. In addition, Trout Unlimited will be hosting an event for third grade students attending John B. Cary Elementary School on Friday April 7, from noon to 5 p.m. The students will learn about the life cycle of fish and about their habitat, as well as have the opportunity to fish. The school program has been designed by Trout Unlimited to help the students meet the state's Standards of Learning (SOL) requirements. For more information, contact Christy Everson, 646-5944.
