Many protonotary nests are under way or completed in the nest boxes at Dutch
Gap, and the first egg was layed on April 26th. Thus far we've caught 19
adults, most of them birds that have returned from previous years after
making the successful round-trip between Dutch Gap and Venezula or south
Central America. Seven of those 19 are birds that were banded as nestlings
last year and have survived to enter their first breeding season. Two
others are birds that were originally banded at Charlie Blem's Deep Bottom
site and have chosen Dutch Gap as their breeding ground. Especially
interesting was the capture of a mated pair today that were banded as
nestlings in their respective nest boxes at Dutch Gap on the the same day
last year (5/25/04). Those two boxes are only 220 meters apart. Married a
kid from the neighborhood! Hope they are successful. Not a jot of
experience between them.
