1st prothonotary warbler egg was observed yesterday (May 1) in one of the nest
boxes around the Dutch Gap loop. Females typically lay 3-5 eggs in their first
clutch of the season. They lay 1 egg per day and begin incubation after the
last egg is laid. When I arrived at one location to replace a box that was lost
to the unusually high water early this spring, and waiting for me was a pair of
prothonotary warblers. As I started installing the new box, the male came and
lit on the bow of the canoe while the female observed from a short distance
away. Could this have been the pair that
successfully used that location last year?!?
