The prothonotary warbler project at Dutch Gap is expanding this year with the
number of nest boxes now at 71. The nest boxes, which are on nearly
predator-proof poles just offshore, can be observed
from most points around the Dutch gap loop from about the 1.0 mile marker on.
Two boxes are also visable from the marsh board walk below Henricus where the
walk breaks into the open. One of these is
on the marsh side and the other is on the river side. The first males should
begin arriving in about 3 weeks. While installing the last few boxes this
morning, I heard my first yellow-throated warbler
of the season singing in the woods by the lagoon below our regular banding
site, between the 1.0 and 1.5 mile markers. Together with the prothonotaries,
they breed in good numbers around the Dutch gap
loop.
