Went to Dutch Gap about 8:45 this morning and had just set one foot one the first observation platform when I saw the Moorhen within seconds standing on a log. He quickly hopped into the water and swam-I was able to get one quick image. Also seen was a solitary Coot. A silent but very friendly Yellow warbler, Common Yellowthroat, Orchard Oriole and 2 short flights of the Least Bittern about mid-way out. Many turtles, Canada Geese with goslings in tow and one black snake.
Lots of activity at the home base. Highlights today in our yard:
Northern Parula
Prairie
Redstart
Black-throated Green
Worm eating
Blackpoll
Black and white
Chimney swift
Pewee
Grey Catbird
Thrasher
Great-Crested Flycatcher
Eastern Bluebird (on 2nd clutch)
...and the same usual backyard bunch.
