Awesome day at Dutch Gap this morning. Cloudless skies, a little chill in the air and bird song throughout the woodland made for a great morning as over 50 people turned out for our 2nd bird banding demo this year. We netted 21 birds and had a good variety of resident and migratory birds as well as some recaptured birds from earlier in the season. No shortage of Northern Cardinals but coming in close second were Brown Thrashers and Grey Catbirds. Great birds to have close up in the hand. A Magnolia warbler, Common Yellowthroat, Ovenbird and White-eyed vireo reminded us that migration is still in process. Here's the breakdown of the birds:
Northern Cardinal (NOCA) 6
Carolina Wren (CARW) 4
Carolina Chickadee (CACH) 1
White-eyed Vireo (WEVI) 1
Common Yellowthroat (COYE) 2
Magnolia Warbler (MAWA) 1
Ovenbird (OVEN) 1
Brown Thrasher (BRTH) 3
Grey Catbird (GRCA) 2
Thanks to all the folks who turned out to visit the station and appreciation also to Mark Battista and Chesterfield Parks and Rec. for giving us a home and all the MAPS volunteers for their commitment to the birds.
