We spent our Memorial Day Weekend on the Eastern Shore of MD. Our day on
the tidal marsh in Dorchester County was amazing. Rain, mosquitoes,
gnats and no-see-ums aside, the birds were tremendous. We saw dozens of
Marsh Wrens singing and defending their territories - the male would pop
up and stretch his legs to straddle two pieces of marsh grass - and scold
us as we passed. The Seaside Sparrows were equally numerous and singing
to defend their territories, so we saw them in good numbers, too. Black
Ducks breed in significant numbers in the marshes. In all we IDed 30
some species, including Willets, Whimbrels, and terns, without the
advantage of a falling tide to show off the mud flats and other wading
birds. On our day in the marsh we saw no other people.
Rain totals suggest that Richmond was wet, too. Trust folks found a way
to enjoy.
