Does anyone know exactly how to send a note to the EPA? The Audubon site
accessed by the link in Larry's message does not help -- it just says to "send
your comment to the EPA immediately".

Carbofuran in Louisiana
Carbofuran is a very deadly pesticide. Tests in Virginia were so
convincing, that regulations were enacted prior to the completion of the
testing ( I believe this is accurate). To allow an emerency repeal of the
ban would open the door for many other such requests. This should not be
allowed.
The rice farmers may have serious financial problems due to the weevil.
They are relying on the pesticide that they have used in the past. Audobon
should recognize the farmer's situation also and try to convince them to use
alternative, less troublesome pesticides, or other means. Audobon should
also look at softening the financial implications - pay for crop losses in
exchange for not spraying. As with many grains, the actual profit from an
acrea of rice is probably not that great. The more they invest in saving the
crop, the more they will need to spray to regain thier investiment. It
would be similar to ranchers being paid when grizzly bears kill livestock.
I hope some one through the list serve can keep us informed about this
event.
Bob Siegfried.
