On Saturday evening I noticed some birds on the grass in the back lawn just
before dark, so I was watching them when one flew up to the deck and started
flying against the brick wall just under the eaves. It went all around the deck
that way and finally found a flood light mounted on the wall about 8 feet from
the gas grill. It settled on the round electrical box to which the light was
attached. It was a White-throated Sparrow.
We watched it for a few minutes, but then I had to go out and cook the main
course on the grill. I turned on another light - not the flood - and carefully
poked my head out the door, which is only 4 feet from the flood light. The bird
turned its head but stayed there, so I went out and took the cover off the
grill. The bird looked at me but didn't budge. So I proceeded to cook dinner
and the bird never left.
This morning I went out and the sparrow had already left to feed, but there
were two small droppings that were located in a way which, once hardened, would
have made the perching site more flat. They are still there, and we will be
watching tonight to see if she returns.
