Last night I was on the boardwalk at 8pm and heard peenting that sounded
like it might be rising up through the canopy from nearby undergrowth. By
the time I got to open sky at the meadow nothing was visible except the
resident bat. Tonight I got there just before 8 and at 8:05 I saw 2 CONIs
above the pond. Walking the trails I heard more peenting overhead near the
junction of the creek with the James and could see nighthawks above the
trees. At one of the blinds by the pond I briefly had 7 in view at one
time. The peenting last night was definitely closer to the ground than what
I heard this time. The river level does not look high enough to enter the
main kingfisher burrow, though I did not cross the creek to get the best
view. No sign of owls lately, but I am not getting over there much.
