Today I visited the Chickahominy River with a group of representatives from
various organizations doing planning for a potential Chickahominy River Water
Trail. Highlight sightings (recorded by Bill Portlock of the Chesapeake Bay
Foundation) were totals of 4 adult and 9 juvenile bald eagles, literally dozens
of ospreys (too many to count), two red-tails, and a new rookery with 21 great
blue heron nests, with a heron in each one. We know it's new this year because
the Chickahominy who were part of the group are on the river all the time, and
said it wasn't there last year.
The most unusual sighting, which none of our group had ever seen before, was a
Canada goose nesting in an osprey nest about 20 feet above the water. This was
near the mouth of Diascund Creek, and one of the party took pictures. Has
anyone else ever seen a squatter nesting goose?
