Yesterday I took part in my first Christmas Bird Count ever. It was great
fun, I met lots of nice new people, visited an area I had wanted to explore
and never made it to with people who knew it well, learned a few new things,
saw some great birds, managed to be useful, and just generally had a really
awesome day! I know there are competent birders out there who think to
themselves "I wish I could do that" or maybe "I ought to do that someday".
Maybe it never fit your life/schedule before (me). Now is the time! You
can do it! There are bird counts already done that could have used more
people and there are counts coming up that still need people to provide
adequate coverage to areas like the Eastern Shore, NoVA (no, it's not all
concrete and traffic jams, for those of you who live in ROVa), MD, DE, etc.
A good place to start would be to contact Harry Armistead
(harryarmistead@xxxxxxxxxxx) and check out information at
http://www.audubon.org/bird/cbc/getinvolved.html. Other compilers will most
likely send reminders soon. Many of these people needing volunteers are the
same people leading the field trips we all know and love, tireless workers
holding office in organizations that do good things for the critters and
places we all know and love, spending many hours at hawk watches... Can you
open up a day to give them a hand, or at least work on scheduling some time
next year? I know I will be doing this again! Have a great day!
