[va-richmond-general] Byrd Park GHO

Hi,

Since posting my picture of the Great Horned Owl yesterday I've been a bit
flooded with requests for the exact location of the nest in Byrd Park. I
guess it's a special treat to see an owl and lots of folks would like to go
take a look. Although I know where the nest is, I am not familiar enough
with the park to give a good description of its location. The problem is
compounded by how many trees there are, with roads criss-crossing
everywhere, and the fact that the nest is camouflaged pretty well. Since
quite a few Richmond birders are aware of the nest, would anyone else care
to give a try at some decent directions for interested folks? Someone could
post the directions here on the Richmond listserve. If there is a concern
about advertising the location of this nest.I personally don't believe any
harm would come to the owls. The nest is insanely high and one must stand
back a fair distance and at just the right angle to even view it, even if
you know it is there. Because of the business of the park, many people are
driving by, jogging by, and riding by, often walking their dogs, etc. The
owls seem to ignore most of the action below, with an occasional interested
glance.
