This morning I saw a chickadee pop its head out of the bluebird box. It then
popped it back in. A little later, I saw a chickadee fly in our yard. It did
not seem interested in the birdhouse. So I checked it out. The nestlings are
gone! They all flew off, leaving an empty nest. It took about a month (April
11 - May 12) from nest with no eggs to empty nest.
I don't know the status of the great-crested flycatcher nest in our martin
house. I would have to look into it from a ladder with a flashlight, since I
would have to take it apart with screws to find out if there are any eggs or
baby catchers in there.

Hi Jim.
My chickadees are getting ready to fledge and similar to you the parents are
very aggressive/protective.
Neat time of year.

Here is my chickadees' nestlings. They are starting to look like adult
birds. The parents are starting to become aggressive. They don't want any
red-bellied woodpecker to get anywhere near their nestlings, and so they
come out to harass the bigger bird when he comes to our yard to feed on the
suet.
I also now believe that the martin house in my yard is now home to a nest of
Great Crested Flycatchers. I had never seen these birds before. There are
two adults that frequent this house.
So now I have flycatchers in the martin house and chickadees in the Ukrops
birdhouse.

Got rained out of banding today...but a light mist is my favorite day to be
in the garden to pull weeds and plant. It's hard to garden though with
binoculars around your neck-but the bird song was incredible. Here's some
