[va-richmond-general] Bittern?

I am new to Va and new to this list.
I can only identify a bird I saw today on Falling Creek Reservoir as a
Bittern, although it seemed to have a longer tail then what I see in the
Smithsonian Handbook.  Is this possible or is there another bird which looks
like it
