Greetings, folks!
Here's a very leisurely list of things I've seen in Belize thus far. I've been
taking myself on self-guided mini-tours tours (so to speak) of the
plantation/golf course where I am staying. Lots of wildlife here, including 2
indigenous crocodiles that live in the ponds on the golf course, and hordes of
iguanas that inhabit the little rocky rises on the course.
Anyway, will be going to some more "known" birding spots later in the week, but
here's my list:
Great Blue Heron (who'd have thought!)
Little Blue Heron
Cattle Egret (by the hundreds, all over the lawn...everyone's)
Black & Turkey Vulture
Osprey (Ospreys in Belize look slightly different than ours)
White Hawk
Killdeer (getting harassed at night by an owl)
Pale-vented Pigeon
Red-billed Pigeon
Olive-throated Parakeet
White-crowned Parrot
White-fronted Parrot
Red-lord Parrot
Grove-billed Ani (my wish to finally see an Ani has been granted!)
Barn Owl (chasing Killdeer in the dark)
White-necked Jacobin
White-bellied Emerald
Rufous-tailed Hummingbird (serenading me- didn't know they were such singers)
Belted Kingfisher
Amazon Kingfisher
Rufous-tailed Jacamar (quite a highlight for me!)
Collared Aracari
Keel-billed Toucan
Golden-fronted Woodpecker
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (apparently they do not all go north!)
Olivaceous Woodcreeper
Ochre-bellied Flycatcher
Sulphur-rumped Flycatcher
Olive-sided Flycatcher
Yellow-bellied Flycatcher
Acadian Flycatcher (that call of theirs jumped out at me!)
Great-crested Flycatcher (always glad to hear them)
Great Kiskadee (another bird I've always wanted to see)
Social Flycatcher (like a smaller Kiskadee)
White-eyed Vireo
Red-eyed Vireo
Brown Jay
Tree Swallow
White-breasted Wood-wren
Wood Thrush
Gray Catbird (there's always on "zeeing" at you around here)
Blue-winged Warbler
Tennessee Warbler
Northern Parula
Magnolia Warbler
Worm-eating Warbler
Kentucky Warbler
Hooded Warbler
Summer & Scarlet Tanagers
White-winged Tanager
Olive-backed Euphonia
Great-tailed Grackle (by far the most numerous bird on this property)
Yellow-bellied Cacique
That's about 56 species, and I wasn't even really trying yet, either! Am using
"Birds of Belize" by H. Lee Jones, and it's quite thorough with good
illustrations and information, too. The owner of the property where I'm
staying got it so I and his neighbor (another avid birder) could use it for
outings. Highly recommended if you come down here.
Anyway, the rain just stopped so I'm taking my binocs out to see who might be
visible. Have been reading all the messages about the Orange-crowned someone
recently saw, too. Will check in later.
