The Simmons are in a different category: Digital Binoculars. There are
several other brands as well. I don't have any experience with them, but
have the feeling they would be great if what you want to do is take pictures
of birds and just want snapshots, not high quality images. For general
birding I would think that feature might get in the way, plus add to the
weight and bulk of the optics.  However, Simmons does make an 8x42 version
that may be OK. The 8x22 and 8x30 versions may have too narrow a field of
view for birding.

Al, thanks for the information - I will start reading and investigating.

One thing I came across today was the Simmons CaptureView Binoculars.  Any
opinion on those?  I really like the idea of being able to capture images
through the binocular lens.
