Judith,
Eagle Optics has a section in their website that gives advice for buying
optical gear like binoculars. They also sell several brands.
http://www.eagleoptics.com/
There is a good document in the Birdwatchers Digest website too on how to
select optics.
http://birdwatchersdigest.com/
Adorama carries lots of good optics for birders, such as Celestron, etc. We
got an 8X42 pair called Celestron Regal, which is the same as the Eagle
Optics Ranger. They are waterproof and work very well. In the $300 plus
price range, they are much less expensive than high end binocs like Ziess,
Leica, Swarovsky, etc., and great for eyeglass wearers.
Binocs with a view wider than 7x30 are best for birding. Read what the
reviewers say and you will agree. You can keep weight down by buying binocs
with the features you want but which weigh less. Roof prism binocs are
usually smaller than porro prism, and are considered better for birding by
most people. They do cost more.

All the bird stores carry binocs, and also general sporting goods stores
like Greentop, Gaylans, Dick's, etc. Walmart may even have some good ones.
Online purchasing is also a good way to go, but you have to know what you
want. If you do a Google search for Binoculars you will get lots of info.
Add "birding" and it may reduce the number of hits.
Good luck,
Al Warfield

Subject: [va-richmond-general] Binocular help
I have been bird watching for years using Bushnell 7x35 extra wide angle
binoculars. The only additional info I have is that they note they are =
576'
@ 1000 yds. I would like something stronger but have no idea what to =
get.
I would greatly appreciate suggestions on getting something better - =
perhaps
also smaller.
Thanks in advance for your help.
