[va-richmond-general] Re: Backyard feeding in general

Hi Kate,

Squirrels can definitely be a nuisance. Unfortunately,
sometimes you just gotta live with 'em. If you have
room in your yard, I'd buy an inexpensive plant hook,
a tall one that stakes into the ground (bought mine at
target for 12 bucks). You can also buy one of those
cheap metal cage style suet feeders. They usually come
with a littel chain so you can hang it from the plant
hook. Then find a spot in the yard away from trees
(and potted pansies) and put the plant hook there.
Then grease the pole. It might take a while for
woodpeckers to find the feeder. But winter is a good
time to try to attract them. Another idea is to find a
spot in the yard where you don't mind squirrels
feeding and put out some peanuts or dried corn.
Basically this is bribing the squirrels not to eat the
bird food.

As for bird songs, eNature.com is a great site.
