[va-richmond-general] Re: An open letter to Michael Shapiro

Thank you for noting this as I, too, always read Michael's articles and
have used them as part of the educational materials when I lead birding
programs for DCR at Pocahontas State Park.

People have commented to me, numerous times now, on the uppity-ness of
some in the larger birder community and how this (negatively) impacts their
choices on where and with whom to bird, and whether or not to join
associations or birder groups. This translates directly, for those not
fluent in the language of *subtlety*, into a potential loss of interested
people new to birding. Being competitive is fine, so long it's friendly and
not condescending.

  >>>> I thought it was informative and humorous and light-hearted, and
best of all, not in the least patronizing. Some birders, especially the
competitive ones (they won't know who they are, most likely) do tend to be
more than a bit of the latter. That's not only a turn-off for kids, but
it's a turn-off for other adults too.
