The USGS topo maps state that Mt. Rogers is indeed 1,746 meters high.  It's 
listed in the DeLorme Virginia Atlas as the highest peak in Virginia.

I don't know.  My host was a local who's lived there his entire life, and
he
stated that it was the highest point.   *shrug*
