[va-richmond-general] Am. bittern, Rusty BBs, & barred owls yes--JRPS The Wetlands (Richmond)

The bittern was there at "The Bittern Pool" late this afternoon along with a
red shouldered hawk that is really good at catching frogs. The pair of owls
was near the pipeline. One had a frog to give the other one, but they
apparently had not yet re-established contact. Never knew they can hoot
with a frog in their bill! It is rather amusing to see (and a little
muffled), but it got the job done. Looked for the bittern about 20 or 30
minutes later with another birder, but it had moved. If you are coming to
see it, probably later is better if the morning is cold. The frogs probably
won't be out until it warms up. Remember the pool is in a triangle with the
main pond and the cedar as the other 2 points. The meadow is very wet and
there is plenty of water in the woods and connecting to the pond so it may
take some patient looking from several different directions. The entrance
is at the end of Landria Dr. off Wallowa Rd.
