Well, being the suspicious soul that I am, having heard no response, and having
faith in your intelligence, which I do . . .
What is the correct answer to my querry, what do these birds see when they see
a black windshield wiper blade? A kindergartener would get this one.
I've done my research and know significantly more about Black Vultures than I
did a few hours ago.
Unlike Turkey Vultures, they do not rely on smell, but on their vision to find
a meal. I assume from this that they have exceptional vision which would mean
that they see color. Many predetors, (and yes, I know, technically they aren't
predetors)including cats, are blue/green color-blind, but are very sensitive to
red.
I noticed a lot of red trucks heading towards Virginia Power. Are red vehicles
targeted more often? Then, white? Then, lastly black? What happens if you
put the silhouette of a Vulture on your car or boat? I am guessing something
really bad. And my deductable is just too high to try this. Someone who has a
boat ready to sink might give this a shot.
I came across the word "persecuted" twice in my reading. I came across the
words "Jim Crow" once. Several times, they were referred to as Carrion Crows.
I mention this because I referred to a book which described some Crow behavior.
I also read that these particular animals, who have adjusted to and in some
ways benefitted from human encroachment had been known to BEFRIEND people. I
suppose that one might assume, then, that they are easily trained. Animals WHO
are easily trained are easily dissuaded from destructive activities (i.e.
easily tamed) if one any takes the time to comprehend their point of view.
This is conjecture on my part. Crows, Jays, Magpies, Vultures: very
intelligent creatures. Perhaps, more reasonable to learn to live with them
through understanding.
One day an attorney for Earth Justice will take up the cause of those who can't
speak our language. And that attorney might say, if they "loaf" then they are
vagrants and should be arrested for such. And if they destroy property, they
they are guilty vandelism and there are laws to punish them. But the laws do
not comdemn those guilty of such things to death. And an attorney might say
that the word euthanasia has been substitued for a more accurate description of
how Black Vultures are punished. Slaughter is the correct word. These are
bright creatures with memories. If they witness us slaughter them . . . aren't
we just making matters worse?
And does anyone on this list-serve give a HOOT anymore? I bet this is a really
easy problem to solve. I would love to know your ideas. Truly.
Oh, by the way, from what I read, they don't migrate. They are here to stay
unless we kill them all off.
Hope I haven't offended anyone.
