On Thursday evening, January 13 and again yesterday evening, January 31, I
heard woodcocks doing their flight-display song and peenting. Both
observations were just after sundown. On Jan 13 the birds were in a
privately owned field opposite the Wilna tract of the Rappahannock National
Wildlife Refuge; on Jan 31, the birds were on the Wilna tract itself. On
both occasions there appeared to be about 3 birds, but it was difficult to
see.
We have these birds here for the winter also so it's not easy to
distinguish them from returning migrants.
Last year, 2004, I heard them singing and peenting for the first time on
February 22.
