To me it is an illogical argument to say that because other things kill
birds, then let us not worry about the birds killed by the wind

Good point about the power lines. In the long run, it may become a part
of this issue. At the moment, the cost of transmission is a significant issue
for a wind project developer, so most projects are built where access to the
utility system is readily available.
Regarding your second point, numeracy is important. You say, "If we used
that reasoning, we wouldn't protect anything," but I don't agree. If we used
that reasoning, we would worry about the really significant sources of bird
kills--especially the ones that have no offsetting environmental benefits
(unlike wind) and not (or not so much) about the insignificant ones.
