To the poster who asked about directions to Huntley. It's about a 3 hr. =
drive. I guess you could check with mapquest.com, but the best way is =
probably I-64 east to Charlottesville, then take Rte. 29 north to the =
Culpepper area to Rte. 15 north.
Take 15 north to Rte. 28 to Manassas. In Manassas, go on the Prince Willia=
m=
County Parkway east. I believe the Parkway ends near I-95 at Horner Rd. =
Take it a few blocks to Rte. 123, go south (right) on 123 for less than 1/2=
=
mile and then take Rte. 1 north.
I don't remember local landmarks here. You may need a local map here. On =
Rte. 1 in Fairfax County, south of the city of Alexandria, go left on =
Lockheed Blvd. After a couple of blocks, the road bends 90 degrees to the =
right. Instead, go left into the park entrance.=20
Other cool birding spots are Mason Neck SP, Mason Neck NWR, and Pohick Bay =
RP (Bald Eagle, Gr. Blue Heron). These are on the peninsula of Mason Neck,=
=
which you will pass on the right on Rte. 1 just north of Prince William =
County. Mason Neck SP is my personal favorite. Check out the Bayside =
Trail. Hunting Creek and the mouth of Hunting Bay, just south of the =
Beltway along the GW Parkway (park at the Bell Haven Marina lot and walk =
north along the bike path to the bridge) are OK for shorebirds at this time=
=
of year. You'll need a scope for the best views, though.
=46or detailed directions, get a copy of the ABA Guide to Virginia or =
=46inding Birds in the National Capital Area by Claudia Wilds.
Hope this helps. Happy birding!
Scott M. Baron
Fairfax, Va.
