Sue and other data-minded VAbirders,
On Saturday, 9/21, my son and I birded Belle Haven and Dyke Marsh. We saw
a single A.Coot hanging out with the Mallards in the vicinity of Dead
Beaver Cove, or whatever those in the know call that spot along Haul Road.
My son, who loves Coots and whose license plate reads "Fulica," was most
pleased!

While making my rounds in Fauquier County yesterday, I noted the arrival
of 12 American Wigeon on the Airlie Reservoir and a single American Coot
(ok not technically waterfowl) on a small private farm pond. I was
expecting the wigeon but not the coot. Seems a bit early for them and I
don't recall seeing any posts about any on the Potomac which is where I
would expect them to show up first. I tried to turn it into a moorhen
but it just wasn't to be. At any rate, waterfowl are showing up so if
you are tired of looking at warblers (who would possibly feel that
way!), then start scanning lakes and rivers for ducks.
