SEASONAL WATERBIRD FIELD ASSISTANT for The Nature Conservancy’s VIRGINIA
COAST RESERVE needed starting early May (start date flexible) for 13
weeks. Field assistant will assist with monitoring, research and
management activities for nesting colonial waterbirds and shorebirds on
the barrier islands and marshes of Virginia’s Eastern Shore. Monitoring
and research activities include: shorebird and waterbird surveys,
shorebird and waterbird productivity monitoring, American Oystercatcher
banding and resighting and data entry. Management activities include:
posting and patrolling bird colonies on the barrier islands, educating
island visitors about beach nesting birds, maintaining signage and
assisting with mammal research. Additional duties may be assigned.
Compensation: $8/hour, 40 hours/week. Assistance with housing may be
available. Personal vehicle required. Applicants must be highly
motivated and organized, willing and able to learn quickly and work
independently with minimal supervision, in good physical condition, and
willing to endure sometimes strenuous days of walking long distances (up
to 8 miles) on sandy beaches in HOT and HUMID conditions with biting
insects. Applicants with or pursuing a BS in wildlife management,
conservation biology, ecology or related field and/or experience with
field biology preferred. Applicants must have basic shorebird and
waterbird identification skills, boat handling experience and a great
attitude. Some weekend and holiday work will be required. This is a
great opportunity to work with several species of shorebirds and
waterbirds (oystercatchers, Black Skimmers, Least Terns, etc.) in a
unique barrier island ecosystem. The Eastern Shore of Virginia offers
unlimited opportunities for fantastic birding, kayaking and fishing, all
in close proximity to Virginia Beach and Norfolk, Virginia. To apply,
