[va-bird] watching young Downies on Bear Mt.

I am enjoying watching the antics of a young Downy Woodpecker and its parent. The young bird is quite large and seems larger than the adult, though that may be because of its fluffiness. The adult bird goes to the suet feeder, while the youngster waits on the deck railing. It seems to do everything to get attention- flutter its feathers, raucously practice every sound that Downies make, whatever! The parent takes a bit of suet and repeatedly feeds the fledgling. Then, when he's had enough, he practices climbing up and down the deck railings, sometimes falling and flying off if he hasn't got it quite right. Makes you feel lucky to be able to watch these important life lessons.
The pair of Red Crossbills still visits regularly. I'm waiting for them to be accompanied by their young too. Also the male Rose-breasted Grosbeak has returned to feeding at the black oil sunflower seeds. We have had many birders visit to see the crossbills and none have been disappointed. Goden-winged warblers are also regulars in the woods near the little pond. Check out directions and website at www.mountain-retreat.com.
