I have a group of 5 bluejays that are always somewhere around my house and
they are definite troublemakers-always getting into something or other. There
are also four crows that hang together and keep each other from getting bored
at anyones expense. Well, today about 10:30am one of the crows lost his
attention and got separated from the others. The juvenile Sharpshinned hawk
thats
been around several days found him and was right on his tail chasing him across
the 8 acre lake in my front yard. It was really working that crow-right on his
tail. I could hear contact. The hawk had less mass wt. but had the advantage
of the attack. Before they were 1/4 of the way across the lake, a resident
Kingfisher actually joined the hawk in persuing the crow. I doubt if any of
them
were ever 3' apart. It was tough on the crow as he had to try to fly ahead and
then turn backwards to protect his..well lets say tail. And they were coming
at him from top and bottom at times. Plus he was over water and had to keep
going. They got several feathers out of the crow before he got across the lake.
I'd swear the hawk and the kingfisher were working together with some of the
moves they pulled off. Not only was this unusual because nothing ever seems to
bother the kingfisher and it never seems to bother anyone else, but I've never
seen a bird work with a hawk in persuit before. Dave White Zion
