Hello Birders,
Just as a brief follow-up to Lewis' notes.
On 4/8 at the I birded the Wetlands in the late afternoon 4:00 - 5:30pm. We
(myself and visiting birder Jon Curson) also saw 4 HORNED GREBE on the River
near the canoe/kayak launch area. Also 1 ad. BALD EAGLE overhead.
On 4/9 we birded from Reedy Creek to Southcliffe Rd in the am 7:30- 9:30.
Saw 8 HERMIT THRUSH, and a single Palm Warbler in Forest Hill Park. Great
looks at Yellow-Throated Warbler from Riverside Drive near Southcliffe Rd.
Saw my FOY Green Heron in the Japenese Gardens at Maymont later in the
morning.
On 4/10 I walked from Reedy Creek up close to the Nickle Bridge in the
evening 6:00 - 7:30 pm.
The numbers of BONAPARTE'S GULL increased to about 150. Also 3 LESSER BLACK
BACK GULL (2 ad. + 1 2nd winter) on the rocks near Nickle Bridge. HERRING
GULL about 150, RING-BILLED GULL about 250.
Also 1 WINTER WREN singing.
This morning 4/11 I was back at the Wetlands between 9:30-10:30. A LOUISIANA
WATERTHUSH was in fine voice just off the trail as you enter from Landria
Dr. Also had great looks. 1 FORSTER's TERN flying up river. 8 SWAMP SPARROW.
BLUE GRAY GNATCATCHER pair building nest. Speaking of nests ... I am
wondering if the SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS that were seen on nest are COOPERS
HAWKS (assuming we are talking about the same nest)? I didn't see them this
morning, but have observed the pair many times this year and have been
identifying them as Coopers Hawk. Next time I see them I'll be sure to have
an extra good look to make sure.
All the best.
