Clothed in many layers, I enjoyed the
envigorating and brisk wind on Sunday from the
ponds on route 3 in King George to Westmoreland
State Park, Currioman Bay, and Leedstown in
Westmoreland Co.
I do not have my list here, but notables
included:
a) About 10,300 Ruddy ducks (over 95% male!),
about 20 black scoter (no surfs), about 140
greater scaup and 40 lesser scaup (if I remember
my numbers right)and several goldeneyes seen from
the cliffs of Westmoreland State Park (Maryland
water)
b) 3 male redheads, 55 gadwalls and 245 tundra
swans at Washington's Birthplace
c) a decline in Canada Geese and most ducks
(except ruddies) since earlier in the season
d) also many fewer roadside sparrows and juncos
(only about 50 all day)
e) a couple dozen shovelers and about 60 coots at
the route 3 ponds along with some ring-neckeds,
buffleheads, lesser scaups, hooded mergs, common
mergs, pied billed grebes, etc
f) lots of green winged teals, 40 pintail, and a
couple of snipes in Leedstown
g) about 200 canvasbacks and a few dozen
buffleheads in Currioman Bay
Glad my e-mail is back in working order. Couldn't
