For the past week I have been watching and counting, between about 5 and 6 pm
each night many hundreds of robins flying over the saddle of ridge between the
abbey and the Blue Ridge Parkway. The highest counts were just about the time
the cold front was passing through, when I had at least 4000 in an hour and a
half. The numbers have been slowly dwindling, until today I only counted 1200
between 4:30 and 6 pm.
Purple Finches have been regularly coming to the feeders, with House Finches
and Goldfinches, but the Siskins left a couple of days ago. 40 Siskins is the
most I had at one time.
There are still a few Chipping Sparrows around, as well as Towhees, Field, Fox,
Song and White-throated Sparrows. The big flocks of Juncos have formed.
