[va-bird] threat to eagles

I read with concern that nine white-tailed eagles have been killed in
less than a year at a key breeding site in Norway. Only one pair of
eagles had young this year at Smoela, a set of islands off
Norway, according to the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.
These islands used to be a stronghold of these species with up to 19
pair before the construction of a wind turbine site in 2002. Turbine
blades have killed 9 birds in the last 10 months, including all 3 chicks
fledged last year. The RSPB urged governments to be cautious in the
siting of wind "farms",. "Developers and governments should take note,
these types of impact must be properly considered and acted upon when
proposals are first made to avoid the unnecessary losses we are
witnessing on Smola. The eagles' death confirm the fears we expressed
before the windplant was built, and show how devastating a poorly sited
wind farm can be."
I am concerned about the future of our healthly population of both
golden and bald eagles in Highland County, especially with the promising
results of the Eagle Survey done earlier this year and the confirmation
of nests and fledglings. The proposed wind project (and others
threatening the ridges of Highland County) would be built on the ridges
these species use for both migration and daily activities. Of course,
many other species of birds ( and bats) have the potential to be
seriously impacted.
