A YELLOW WARBLER!? singing, seen by both myself and David Buckley on Cockpit
Rd, Prince William Co. Somewhat early, but guess what? We heard another one
singing nearby while we were watching the first one. We also found a
YELLOW-THROATED WARB along Possum Point Rd, near the first power co.
gate/pulloff.
There were plentiferous WOOD DUCKS on Quantico Creek, at least 24. A few GW
TEAL, some COOTS, a pair of COMMON MERGS (in a small pond off PP Rd) and 4,
maybe
5 adult B. EAGLES and one Juvie. - up on Cockpit Rd, we also heard a few
TURKEY gobbles and found some RING-NECKED DUCKS in the sludge pond. Cockpit Rd
was
so quiet as to be almost scary, so we headed north, stopping at the Occoquan
Bay Marina where we saw all the Mergansers in small numbers and 1 HORNED GREBE
just about in breeding plumes and a few BUFFLEHEADS. Next stop was Mason Neck
where we heard a few PINE WARBLERS on the entrance road. We walked in to the
Great Marsh, w. Great Expectations, but came up a bit short, finding only a
bakers dozen of AM BLACK DUCKS and a G YELLOWLEGS. One RT HAWK cruised over the
marsh. We also counted 4 adult BALD EAGLES and 1 COOPERS HAWK at this location.
Last stop was Riverside Park, off the GW Pkwy where there was a large raft of
COOTS (250), and a few GADWALL mixed in. One HORNED GREBE as well...
pretty fun morning...
