On Monday, May 14th, Sandy Hevener and I did a little eagle scouting in the
afternoon up near Lantz Mt. in Highland County. We were on private property
off Rt. 644 by permission of the owner. Saw a shrike, though the view was too
brief for a positive id on species. Also saw and heard several Great Crested
Flycatchers, a female orchard oriole, and many Brown Thrashers. We were on a
mission to find a road to access the ridge line, so we did not spend much time
birding, but the area was definitely filled with birds with a nice variety of
old-field and edge habitats. We also saw an immature Golden Eagle (properly a 2
or 3 year old) in the field to the west of Rt. 643 near the base of Lantz Mt.
Yesterday I saw a single N Rough-winged swallow flying on my property near the
pond. My husband heard a golden-winged warbler this weekend, but
unfortunately, I can't hear them unless they are extremely close. A Least
Flycatcher is singing constantly just behind the house, in the exact same place
as last year.
