All,
I checked out the sod farms in Culpeper County along Newbys Shop Road
this morning. I found 15 American Golden-Plover in the plowed field
nearest the road at the big curve. Also a Western Sandpiper and
Semipalmated Plover among the many, many Killdeer.
At Kettle Wind sod farms along Bristow Road in Prince William County
there were 1000's of Laughing Gulls with Ring-billed Gulls and a single
Lesser Black-backed Gull plus one Black-bellied Plover. I am sure there
were shorebirds in all the puddles but I couldn't see them from Split
Oak Lane.
I also checked the sod farms near Remington in Fauquier County but
didn't find much. The field on the north end has been plowed and looks
really good for birds but I found only a few Horned Larks and two
American Kestrels. There was evidence of one of the many tornadoes
along Sumerduck road (a downed tree and several Virginia Power trucks)
and where there is usually a small stream passing under the road near
the town of Remington there is now a large lake. The field along
Cemetary Road near Rt. 29 also had nothing but Killdeer. More evidence
of tornadoes on Dumfries Road near Rt. 29 where many trees were snapped
off about 10 feet from the ground and many folks were out with chain
saws clearing the mess away. Glad there were no injuries!
