The Reddish Egret wasn't visible from the causeway to Chincoteague between
11:30 a.m. and about 1:00 p.m. today, but scores of herons, egrets, ibis, and a
few stilts are there and most pleasant to study; Tom Saunders, Lincoln
Saunders, and I gave it a good hour's try there and went on to check the
refuge.
Best birds of the trip today were a molting Marbled Godwit and a molting
Western
Willet, both in Swan Cove. Both are normally on Great Plains nesting grounds
at this season, so it was a surprise to see both; I've never seen a summering
Marbled Godwit at Chincoteague. Probably both second-year birds.
