For over 2 years I have been happily feeding the birds of my backyard. Within
the past year I even switched to hulled sunflower seeds. But, within the past
6 months or so, I noticed a sharp decline in my seeds. And, in the past two
months, I have nailed the culprits - brazen little (actually, BIG) raccoons.
The fence mounted, squirrel proof feeder won't keep these guys out.
I live in a townhouse, with a tiny, fenced in backyard. I don't have room for
a pole and baffle in the garden, and I can't mount one on top of the fence,
because that's against HOA regulations (not to mention, it would be more
difficult to reach to refill).
But, it came to me yesterday what I needed. I need a feeder that automatically
opens at sunrise, and shuts at sunset. I don't mind if the birds don't have
access to it in the nighttime hours, and the raccoons probably wouldn't venture
out during the day. Am I on to something here? Has anyone ever heard of such
a thing? I figure in this time of birding gluttony (when you can buy ANYTHING
bird related at any cost), there should be something out there for me.
Any one have OTHER ideas if I can't commission someone to make this thing for
me? Until I find a solution, I can't put feed out. I just can't afford
the 'coons! :)
